Default Pin For Netbook 5000

Peruvian timber exports could reach U.S. $ 1.500 billion in next four years

wood exports could be increased substantially to total 1.500 billion in the next four years, then in 2009 skirted the 160 million, said today Exporters Association (Adex).

According to Vice-Chairman of Timber and Timber Industry Adex, Luis Aguilar, this scenario would be achieved if they are strengthened and are awarded grants of more than ten million hectares of permanent production forests currently without concession.

explained that, in this way not only increase revenue to the Treasury but that Peru would compete with Chile to export wood products for nearly 3.000 billion, 15 times more than it sells Peru.

"The private sector has done studies and it is possible to reach this goal. This despite the fact that in 2008 exports exceeded $ 219 million and 154 million last year, "he said.

He noted that to achieve the proposed target is a need for appropriate government policies and sustained over time allowing the potential to value forest is much more than wood, this considering that today production areas are not exploited completely.

"Currently only have seven million hectares concession, of which 35 percent advantage, "he said.

Timber exports in the first half totaled U.S. $ 82.6 million, up 30 percent from 63.4 million last year.

The contraction of the timber exports have been cushioned by China, which has become the main destination of imports by sector with $ 40.1 million in the first six months of the year.

The second largest buyer of Peruvian timber products is Mexico (15.6 million), followed by the USA (12.6 million) and the Dominican Republic (3.6 million).
